Sig tutorial!

Welcome to my first tutorial.

Making a basic sig.

Notes.

All my tutorials will be done in PhotoShop CS, although they will work fine with PhotoShop 7

Right, down to basics.

First off open up Pshop.
Make a new file with the following settings

This size is ideal for forums.

Now we need a brief.
The brief for this exercise is a new sig for Hawkeye.
As he's not told us anything about how he wants the sig to look we get to have a play here

Lets do a GIS for Hawkeye.

GIS for Hawkeye

So you can see by looking at the first 3 pages of the GIS we have loads of stuff to choose from, radar planes, superheros, some bad fan anime and a naked mans ass!

I'm gonna go with the superhero!

Pic of Hawkeye

save this pic for now (we'll come back to it later)

and now back to Pshop!

Duplicate the first layer

Now lets add some funky lightning to that layer

Make sure that your colours are set to Black = Foreground and White = Background (TIP: Pressing "D" will reset the colours to this)

Now go Filter > Render > Clouds

you may have to do this a couple of times to get a good balance of clouds on your canvas.

*note*
Clouds
These are the basis for loads and loads of backgrounds and effects, its a good idea to get used to them

Now do Filter > Render > Difference Clouds

Now invert the pic by Holding down CTRL and pressing I

Then bring up the "Levels" option by holding down CTRL and pressing L

Left click and hold over the middle slider tab and drag this all the way to the left, click OK and you have your basic clouds that should look similar to this

Now we can add a bit of colour to our lightning, hold CTRL and press U

Click the box in the corner that says "Colourize"

now have a play with the settings and get a colour you like (TIP: Its a good idea to leave the "lightness" setting on 0 for this bit)

this is what I got

Congratulations, thats the first layer sorted!

Now we need to add the pic of hawkeye

go to file open and select the pic of hawkeye

We need to cut him out, so select the magic wand tool and up at the top set the tolerance to 10

click on a white area of the pic

to select the insides of his bow hold "shift" when selecting, this adds the extra bits to the current selection.

You should now have all the white background areas selected.

Right click on the canvas and select "Select Inverse"

Now the selection should be on Hawkeye, hold CTRL and press C

minimise (or close) the window with Hawkeye in, and maximise your sig

Hold down CTRL and press V to paste him into your sig

Little bit too big huh? Just go to Edit > Transform > Scale

*STOP* Before you go about resizing Hawkeye make sure you hold down CTRL+Shift, this will stop the pic going all out of scale and looking nasty

Get him down to a reasonable size and position him where you want him, then click the wand tool, this will then prompt you if the changes are OK, if they are click OK, if not then click cancel.

Now Hawkeye looks a good size, but he still looks a bit out of place just stuck there, on the layers window click twice where it says "normal"

Then use the down arrow key to move through the options, these are the "layer Blending Styles"

(I did mine using Linear Light, but again theres no hard and fast rule for this)

And this is what I have

And thats the second layer done!

Now for the all important, defining text layer

For my example I chose 72pt Grave Dirt font

Type out your text get the size and font to your liking and then right click twice on the text layer and select "Rasterize layer"

This turns the text layer into an editable image layer

Right click the text layer and select copy

you should now have 2 identical text layers

Hold CTRL and click the lower text layer, then release CTRL and select the lower text layer

Press "D" then "X" this resets your colours then swaps them over

Go to Edit > FIll > and make sure foreground colour is selected and click OK (you won't see anything yet)

de-selelct the selection by right clicking and selelcting "deselelct"

then (with the lower text layer selected) go to Filter > Blur > motion blur

and choose your settings (I did mine with a 90 degree angle and a 15px distance)

and your done!!!!

go file > save as and save as a .gif or a .jpg and give yourself a big pat on the back!! you've done your first sig!

I'm not sure where I got that one from, I've kinda bult my fonts up over time by visiting different free font websites.

Oh yeah and you can also find some very good public domain font .zip files on any good P2P network.

Raptor,

Try Brooklyn.ttf or bringdanoise.ttf (or something like that) - they are both "grafitti" style trutype fonts, downloadable form most sites that host free fonts.

Hey, I made my first signature, according to this tutorial. And I even made it animated: added one of my favorite lines/quotes in it.

Please tell me what you think (keep in mind it's my first one )

Its very nice, looks good.

But there is unfortunatly a no animated sig rule here matey

(not in the tutorial or as a post, just not embeded into your profile as a sig)

Thanks for the compliment, but oops sorry, if I knew it wasn't allowed, I wouldn't have done it (obviously).

Not much of an excuse, still I feel the urge to mention it:
I've visisted lots and lots of fora and are registered to most of them, and they all had basically the same rules. Animated signatures were allowed, as long as the size of it was small (measurements and filesize). I accidentally kept the animations very small, and the size of the picture is not that large, like 41kb or something, animated, so that's even small for low bandwidth users. And if I may say this? It looks like the rules don't implicitly say animated is not allowed, or is it me that's wrong?

Anyways, now I've said that, still my apologies for this!!

I'll create a non-animated version for this forum ASAP

I'm not often one for questioning the rules or bucking authority but seriously guys his sig was tasteful, not over large and not in any way offensive.... couldn't we turn a blind eye?

Hmm I'm not the one to judge that, ofcourse, but I do not want to cause any friction between the members or the authorities here because of this signature!!

So if it's really not allowed, I'll change it, it's just because of the things I explained above that I 'gave it a try'...

So no worries Queeg, thanks for the compliment though

I hope you understand that it would be unfair to bend rules for one forum user.

Explicit signature specifications can be found here:

nope photoshop is NOT freeware, its a high level [ as in professional ] programme and therefore quite expensive

£417.12 is the cheapist

try Paint Shop Pro 9 thats about £56.64 online with kelkoo

amazon had it for £59.99 Paint Shop Pro 9 & Photo Album 5 Bundle , which is a good price, since photo album is worth about £26 :o
