MP3 players?

Ok, my initially much hated iPod Nano (but now well respected) has had a hard life and now has finally strted to die, it has periods where it won't switch on and to be honest.... 2gb just doesn't cut it any more so time for a new one.

So i need your opinions/advice for or against any MP3 players and i am totally open minded about the make.

I'm looking for a SMALL, solid state (no hard disk) MP3 player, as large a capacity as i can get, i don't need or want it to play video, ideally with a remote whether cable of bluetooth, i don't need or particularly want WiFi or any of that stuff. Would prefer it if it used a standard USB cable and was client software free. I'm looking to spend about £100-150 but there is more available if needed.

Please remember the small bit, i want it to fit in to my jeans pocket comfortably.

Help please?

I like my sandisk sansa - sync with basically any software, and can be expanded with standard phone memory cards

From your description the first that comes to mind is the 32gb creative zen @ £150. Small, large capacity and comes with a standard mini-usb socket

Sansa is what I would recommend too. They do some nice versions at a very good price, but still decent quality.

mmm... yeah i really like the idea of using a phone as an MP3 player and i do have a Nokia N96 which i intended to use as a player but it is so unreliable that I have given up on it.

I love Nokia phones, but I would choose a sony ericsson walkman phone everytime, I even have some plug in mini speakers - they're awesome quality too

I've used SE 'candybar' phones as an MP3 player now for 4 years...beats carrying around two items that radiate. Quality is good too...and it's a phone also!

I had forgotten how much I despise iTunes.

My old Nano I used to update with Anapod which worked really well. Sadly the new one needs iTunes and Anapod don't currently support this version of the Nano.

Back to the drawing board.

Anapod is a replacement for iTunes and it doesn't demand that you change all your mp3 files etc to aac files. You can also install it on multiple pc's and it won't wipe your iPod every time you conect it to a new pc.

I'd say there's probably nothing wrong with AAC if encoding from an uncompressed source. But Pure -> MP3 -> AAC = artifacts on artifacts. <shudder>

well nothing i guess, so long as you're going to be predominantly using apple and i simply am not that much of a fan of them. You just can't gaurentee that AAC will be supported by a given player or app. To be frank MP3 is the universal standard, even micro$haft allow us to rip CD's in MP3 format now.
